BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The NCAA released its Division I Academic Performance Program Awards on Wednesday and 13 of Lehigh’s athletic teams were honored for their latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The 13 Lehigh sports that were honored were baseball, men’s basketball, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s rowing, women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, softball, women’s soccer, women’s swimming, women’s tennis and volleyball. The Mountain Hawks 13 honored sports were the third most in the Patriot League behind Bucknell (17) and Holy Cross (14). Lehigh and Lafayette also had 13 programs honored, while Colgate (12), Navy (11), Army (3) and American (2) were next in line.
The NCAA is honoring nearly 800 Division I sports teams from 205 institutions with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. The teams recognized this year represent 11.9 percent of the 6,484 Division I teams. The list includes 448 women’s teams and 319 men’s or mixed squads.
A total of 205 institutions, out of 331 Division I colleges and universities, placed at least one team on the top APR list. Last year, a total of 712 teams were recognized. The number of teams in some sports may exceed 10-percent depending on how many achieved perfect 1,000 APR scores.
The Patriot League’s total of 85 honored sports was second among Division I conferences, trailing only the Ivy League. The Patriot League finished 25 teams ahead of the third-highest conference, the Big East. For the third consecutive year, Yale University had the most teams recognized with 28.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams receiving public recognition awards this year posted APR scores ranging from 976 to a perfect 1,000 over the data collection period.
Multi-year APR scores for all 6,272 Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition awards, will be announced May 6.
