Mountain Hawks cruise past rival Leopards in pool

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh swimming and diving teams dominated archrival Lafayette on Friday evening inside Jacobs Pool as the women notched a 194-104 victory over the Leopards and the Mountain Hawk men scored an impressive 214-84 win. It marks the second consecutive season in which the Brown and White swept its rival and the 19th straight win for the Lehigh men over the Leopards. Tyler Lareau and Allison Rolish posted three victories apiece in the big rivalry win. “We are glad that everything went the way we expected,” Mountain Hawks head coach Rob Herb said afterwards. “Our kids have worked hard for this and it was a great night for Lehigh swimming and diving.”
There were very few races that Lehigh did not take first in on Friday. Leading the way on the men’s side was Lareau who dominated all three events in which he took part in, including the 1000-yard freestyle (10:05.78), the 100-yard breaststroke (53.22) and the 500 free (4:46.77) as he took first in each event.
Frank Cuzzola won the 200 free finishing in 1:43.39 and he also added a first place finish in the 100 free in 47.61 seconds. Alex Aboud won the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.36, Kevin McGrath raced to a first place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.22 and Angelo DiGiacinto won the 100 butterfly as he finished in 51.80 seconds. Aboud also won the 400 yard IM in a time of 4:15.99 with McGrath placing second in 4:24.93.
Jon Westfield (21.96) and Ryan Guttormsen (22.19) went one-two in the 50 free and Andrew Kim (1:57.11), William Dunne (1:59.56) and Andrew DiPietro (2:01.44) took the top three spots in the 200-yard backstroke.
On the women’s side Rolish took first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:30.92, she took first in the 500 free (5:10.68) and she added a third first place finish in the 400 yard IM with a time of 4:39.36.
Kathryn Haycraft and Priscilla Barletta went one-two in the 200 free and Barlettta went onto cross first in the 200-yard butterfly with Alyssa Siano and Julie Sicherman in second and third, respectively. Sicherman won the 100 butterfly in a time of 59.32 seconds with Alena Pollitt not far behind in second in a time of 59.92
Stephanie Naylor crossed first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.67 and Paola Simon finished the 100 free in 54.04 with Kathryn Haycraft coming in second in 54.63. Naylor placed second in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.32) while Emily DiDonato took first in the event with a time of 2:29.00.
In the relay events the women’s team set new school records in the 400 MR with a time of 3:57.62 and the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:39.69.
The Mountain Hawk men won the 200 freestyle in 1:26.92 and they completed the relay sweep in the 400 medley as they finished the race in 3:29.95.
In the diving events Erin Tormey won the 3-meter event with a score of 227.17 while Ryan Helfrich placed second in the men’s 3-meter diving with a score of 231.52.
The Lehigh swimmers will now have over a month off from competition. Following an intense winter training regimen the Mountain Hawks return to the pool on January 9 when they host Marist inside Jacobs Pool. Start time is slated for 1:00.
