PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s soccer team dropped its second match in a row as it lost 2-0 Tuesday night to the Penn Quakers. Penn was able to get a first half goal from Christian Barreiro in the 26th minute and was able to hold the Mountain Hawk offense in check for the rest of the game. With the loss Lehigh falls to 5-4-2 on the season.
After traveling to take on their in-state foe Penn, the Mountain Hawks came out flat in the first half and were never able to recover.
“We came out flat in the first 25 minutes and spent a lot of time defending,” head coach Dean Koski said. “We finally woke up in the last 15 minutes of the first half and played our game, but they already had a goal. We never got ahold of the game like we wanted to and when you do that against a team like Penn they will take advantage of it.”
Lehigh had some momentum heading into the second half, but Barreiro was able to strike for his second goal of the game a little over two minutes into the half. The goal really deflated the Mountain Hawks who were coming off a tough loss to archrival Lafayette on Saturday night.
“We came out better in the second half, but giving up a goal early was tough to come back from,” Koski said. “We did a better job attacking in the second half, but we didn’t finish our chances. We couldn’t put it all together and we were forced to move some players around.”
The Quakers finished the game with a total of 12 shots which doubled Lehigh’s total of six. Mountain Hawks junior goalie Jonathan Nydell made three saves in the loss for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks, 1-1-0 in league play, know what they need to do to prepare for Navy on Saturday.
“We have to put the past two games behind us,” Koski said. “Not that I wasn’t happy with the performance against Lafayette, but we have to focus on Navy. We have three good training days ahead of us and now that the guys are back to school they can get away from some of the Pacing bBreak habits that they may have developed.”
Lehigh will host the Midshipmen Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex in its third match of Patriot League play.
