Mountain Hawks crush Ohio in Va. Duals opener

HAMPTON, Va. – No. 8 Lehigh opened up competition at the Virginia Duals with a convincing 34-8 win over Ohio Friday morning at the Hampton Coliseum. The top seeded Mountain Hawks rolled off eight straight bout wins from 133-197, including falls from juniors Matt Fisk, Mike Galante and David Craig as the Brown and White set a new school record by winning their 13th straight dual meet to start the season.
Trailing 4-0 after 125, Fisk began the eight-win Lehigh run with a first period pin of Quentin Keyes at 133. Classmate Seth Ciasulli extended the Mountain Hawks lead to 10-4 as he utilized a five point first period move to earn a 9-0 major decision over Germane Lindsey.
Consecutive wins by decision from senior Trevor Chinn and freshman Sean Bilodeau extended the lead to 16-4, before Galante delivered the Mountain Hawks their second first-period pin of the dual, as he decked Steve Wilson in 128.
Craig secured Lehigh’s third, and fastest fall of the dual, needing just 51 seconds to stack up Brian Driscoll , for his third pin of the season. Craig’s victory was sandwiched around wins by decision from sophomore Alex Caruso and freshman Joe Kennedy.
At heavyweight, Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro chose to rest freshman Zach Rey and instead allowed freshman Mike Mutch to make his varsity dual debut. Mutch, however, was beaten by major decision, 16-8 by Bobcat freshman Andy Hartschorn.
With the victory, Lehigh improves to 13-0 for the first time in school history. Dating back to last season, the Mountain Hawks have now won 14 consecutive duals, which matches the fifth longest dual winning streak in school annals.
The Mountain Hawks will next face No. 8 seed and 24th ranked Golden Flashes of Kent State in the quarterfinals. Action gets underway at 1 p.m. Friday and all of it can be heard online at Lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports College Broadcast.
