ANNAPOLIS, Md. – No. 8 Lehigh bounced back from its first loss of the season last Saturday by winning seven of ten bouts in a 30-13 victory over Navy Saturday night at Halsey Field House. Junior Mike Galante helped erase a 13-12 Lehigh deficit after five bouts with his team-leading fourth fall of the season, and classmate Seth Ciasulli also added a pin as the Mountain Hawks improve to 16-1 on the season and 3-0 in EIWA duals.
“Galante did great in terms of giving us a boost,” said Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. “He’s been a tremendous team player and has a great understanding of our team concept. It wasn’t our best performance, but our best performance, and overall we’ll have to get sharper as our season progresses.
The night’s opening bout saw Navy’s Allan Stein give the Mids an early 4-0 lead with a win by major decision over sophomore Mitch Berger. Lehigh however, put together back-to-back six point wins to take a 12-4 lead.
Junior Matt Fisk scored the opening takedown in his bout with Tyler Sackett to lead 2-0, but the Navy freshman was forced to default with an injury just 36 seconds into the match. Ciasulli added to the lead as he pinned John Majka in 6:56. Ciasulli was already in line for a major decision, up 9-1 in the third period when he stacked up Majka for his third fall of the season.
The night’s featured bout pitted 14th ranked senior Trevor Chinn against Navy’s fifth ranked Bryce Saddoris. Chinn scored the first offensive points on a double-leg takedown in the first period, and led 3-2 in the final period when Saddoris countered an errant shot and pancaked Chinn to his back, where he secured the fall in 6:15 to put Navy within two. A 7-4 win by Glenn Shober over freshman Sean Bilodeau at 157 put the Mids up 13-12 halfway through the dual.
Galante gave Lehigh the lead for good and started a five-bout Mountain Hawk run to end the dual when he hit a cement job on Matt DeMichiel and closed out his 20th win of the season with a fall in 2:56.
Lehigh captured the final four bouts, all by decision. Alex Caruso needed the tiebreakers to knock off Robby Neill 2-1 at 174. David Craig earned a 5-2 win over Casey Caldwell at 184. Riding time was the difference as freshman Joe Kennedy held off Phil Neese 2-1 at 197, and freshman Zach Rey wrapped things up with an 8-3 win over Tyler Moyer.
The Mountain Hawks will be back on the mats on Friday when they return home for the first time in two months to host the Drexel Dragons. The match gets underway at 7 p.m. from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall and tickets can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME or by visiting the Lehigh ticket office, located in Grace Hall.
