POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Lehigh returned to the water for the first time in over a month, but Marist proved to be too strong, as the defending MAAC champion Red Foxes swept a meet from the Mountain Hawks Tuesday night at the McCann Natatorium. On the men’s side, the Mountain Hawks hung tough, winning six of 13 events but ended up falling 130-113. The Lehigh women could only muster two event wins, as they fell to the Red Foxes 137-99.
Junior Kevin McGrath led the way for Lehigh on the men’s side capturing two individual events. McGrath first won the 400 yard individual medley in 4:15.50 and then added top honors in the 200 breaststroke, with a time of 2:11.63. Senior Dan Johnson won the 100 free in a time of 47.79 seconds, but had to settle for third in the 50 free, as freshman Pat Holmes raced past the field to win the event with an impressive time of 21.98.
Sophomore Andrew DiPietro added another individual win in the 200 back, touching the wall in 2:00.29. DiPietro also teamed with Johnson, junior Ryan Guttormsen and freshman Angelo DiGiacinto to take the 400 free relay. Guttormsen also had a strong showing, taking second to Johnson in the 100 free.
On the women’s side, sophomore Allison Montanye had the top performance, winning the 50 free in 25.72. Freshmen Paola Simon and Alena Pollitt finished third and fourth respectively in the same event, giving Lehigh three of the top four finishers in the event. Rolish added a win in the 200 breaststroke, with a time of 2:28.60.
Despite being limited in terms of event wins, Lehigh scored points with strong second and third place finishes on the women’s side. Freshmen Priscilla Barletta and sophomore Kristen Keenan took second and third respectively in the 200 free, Melanie and Allison Rolish followed suit in the 400 IM, Simon and Barletta then did same in the 100 free and sophomore Lauren Kindrick and Allison Rollish finished 2-3 in the 500 free.
The Lehigh men are now 6-3 on the season, while the women are 5-4.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Sunday when they host Patriot League foe Army in the final home meet of the regular season. Action begins with diving at 10:30 a.m. at Lehigh’s Jacobs Pool with swimming to follow immediately after.
