BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior captain Kara Zweizig netted a pair of goals but it wasn’t enough to propel Lehigh to win in its home opener. Desiree Walker scored 5:37 into the second overtime to propel visiting West Chester to a 3-2 win over the Mountain Hawks Wednesday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh out-shot West Chester 30-18 for the game, but Joelle Zarefoss made 18 saves to help hand the Mountain Hawks their second straight loss to start the season.
“I thought we made a very big improvement from game one,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. We were more organized defensively; we just needed to finish better on the offensive end.”
The Golden Rams went out in front ten minutes in when Alex Swayze scored on a feed from Lauren DuBois. West Chester took a 1-0 lead into halftime despite being out-shot by a 12-6 margin.
Lehigh pulled even at the 47 minute mark when the Mountain Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke, which Zweizig converted to tie the game at one.
Swayze put West Chester back in front at the 53:17 mark when she scored an unassisted goal for her second tally of the night.
Zweizig then helped force overtime with four and a half minutes left as she converted from the back post after a penalty corner strike from senior Kalynn Davies for her second goal of the game and the 16th goal of her career.
After a scoreless first overtime period, West Chester produced the winning goal shortly after the only penalty corner chance of the second OT as Walker redirected home a drive to give the visitors the victory.
Sophomore Jessica Miller made four saves in goal for the Mountain Hawks. Junior Kelly Fox fired a team-high seven of Lehigh’s 30 shots on the evening.
“I saw progress out there and we will get better for the next game,” said Mazer. The key is to keep making positive steps and we’ll look to do so as we prepare for this weekend.”
West Chester picks up its first victory and improves to 1-1 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their home stand on Saturday when they host Bryant University. Game time is set for 11 a.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex and the contest can be seen online at Lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports College Broadcast.
