Lehigh competes at Northeast Intercollegiate

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lehigh continued its fall season at the Northeast Intercollegiate championships hosted by Brown University. Junior Rob Bolcar posted a 3-1 record and finished second in his bracket at sixth singles to lead a contingent of eight Mountain Hawks who competed in the event. The eight Lehigh entrants competed in six singles flights and three doubles flights. Five of the eight Mountain Hawks won matches in singles play, with sophomore Troy List also registering a top-five finish.
Bolcar rolled off wins in each of his first three matches to reach the finals at No. 6 singles. After wins over opponents from UConn and Villanova on the tournament’s first two days, Bolcar downed Dan Conyer of Bryant 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday morning to reach the finals, where he fell 7-6, 6-0 to Alex Hann of Villanova.
List also posted a 3-1 record en route to a fifth place finish at the top singles flight. The 2008 all-league selection won his opening match over Simon Miller of Brandeis but was relegated to the consolations after losing to Martin McIntyre of Colgate in the quarterfinals. On Sunday, List earned straight set wins over Zack Hascoe of Bucknell and Bryan Song of Dartmouth to earn fifth place.
At second singles, Lehigh was represented by freshman Leland Richardson and sophomore Collin Laffey. Both players dropped their opening matches, but Laffey won his first two in the consolations to advance to the ninth place match, where he fell to John Nogueras of Colgate in a third set tiebreak.
Freshman Edgars Rauza and sophomore Chris Collins represented the Mountain Hawks at third singles, with Rauza picking up one win in the consolations.
Junior J.T. Bolcar and freshman Ryan Krueger represented Lehigh at fourth and fifth singles respectively. Krueger downed Brett Tobin of Villanova in three sets in his opening match, but dropped his next two.
In doubles action, Krueger and Rob Bolcar teamed to pick up two consolation wins to finish ninth at third doubles. At first doubles the team of List and Laffey won an opening round match and finished 0-2. Richardson teamed with Collins, also in first doubles, while Lehigh’s second doubles team consisted of Rauza and J.T. Bolcar.
The Mountain Hawks will conclude fall play at the ITA regionals in Philadelphia, beginning October 24.
