TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Lehigh finished up its weekend at the NCAA East Regional Championship, held on the campus of Florida State University on Saturday as sophomore Khalil Uqdah competed in the pole vault.  The IC4A Champion finished in ninth place with a leap of 16’ 1 ¼” which places him on the list of potential qualifiers for Nationals.  “Overall it was a good weekend for us down here,” head coach Matt Utesch said.  “Of course it would have been great to qualify someone for Nationals, but this was a great way to wrap up the season and the good news is that all of these kids (who were at Regionals) are coming back next year and a few of them are coming back for more than one year.”

He continued, “I told the kids that they should be proud of what they accomplished this season and this weekend in particular.  Everyone more than held their own against some of the top athletes from the top programs along the east coast.”

Uqdah’s ninth place finish leaves him with an outside shot of qualifying for Nationals in Iowa later this month.  The top-five finishers in each event from the Regional competitions from across the country automatically qualify for Nationals.  The next set of qualifiers are based on their top marks from throughout the season, with Uqdah’s 17’00 ¾” jump he posted at the IC4A’s serving as his potential qualifying mark.  Mitch Greeley of Clemson won the pole vault at the East Regional with a jump of 17’9”.

On Friday, Shannon Alejandro crossed the finish line in a personal best time of 4:31.90 to finish 24th overall in the 1500-meters.  The junior came in seeded 32nd and defeated runners from West Virginia, Georgetown, Boston College and Villanova to name a few.  Hannah England of host FSU was first in the prelims with a time of 4:12.24.

Sarah Serwo also placed better than she had been seeded crossing in 22nd place with a time of 2:11.24 in the 800-meters.  She too came in seeded 32nd and finished in front of student-athletes from schools such as Miami, Penn State, Charlotte, Central Florida, and Boston College.  The top finisher in the preliminary round was Boston College’s Caitlin Bailey who crossed in 2:05.34.

For the men, Scott Robinson more than held his own versus a stacked field of 400-hurdlers as he placed 16th with a time of 52.11.  The junior from California needed to improve his personal best time by just one-half second to have qualified for finals but had an impressive showing regardless, defeating hurdlers from the likes of UNC-Wilmington, Georgia, Clemson, UConn, Rutgers, Maryland, Princeton, Virginia, Harvard, and Wake Forest.  Terry Thornton of Hampton sprinted his way to first place in a time of 49.69.

In his first NCAA Regional James Pachucki put up quite a showing in the javelin, getting off a throw of 62.00-meters, which lifted him to the top of his flight in front of competitors from Rutgers and Coastal Carolina to name a few.  Georgia’s Chris Hill easily had the longest throw of the afternoon, eclipsing the 80-meter mark at 81.72-meters.
