Mountain Hawks take single game from Princeton

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior Lisa Sweeney won her 20th game of the season, and tied the Patriot League career record for victories as the Mountain Hawks downed Princeton 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at Kaufman Field. The Mountain Hawks jumped in front with three runs in the second inning, while Sweeney carried a shutout as she picked up her 65th career win, tying former Lehigh standout Emily Ling ’05 for the school and league record.

The win ups the Mountain Hawks to 32-13-1 on the year, while Princeton falls to 20-21.

Sweeney went the distance in the circle, allowing four hits while striking out ten, her 15th double-digit strikeout game of the season. After a second-inning leadoff single by Collette Abbott, Sweeney retired the next 16 batters she faced before Jamie Lettire doubled with one out in the seventh. Princeton broke up the shutout bid on a two-out RBI single by Beth Dalmut, but Sweeney got Erin Miller to foul out to third to end the ballgame.

Offensively, Sweeney started the Mountain Hawks three-run second inning with a single up the middle off of Kristen Schaus. Junior Alisha Gonzales then reached on a fielder’s choice while attempting to sacrifice as Lettire’s throw to second base was late, putting runners at first and second with nobody out. Schaus retired the next two batters, before senior Megan Conrad delivered a RBI single that scored Sweeney to put Lehigh on top 1-0.

Freshman Mickey LaValley followed by hitting a flare out to second base. Abbott was unable to make the play, which allowed pinch runner Ali Torborg and Conrad to come around to score.

Each team had four hits on the day, with LaValley and senior Taryn Hanley providing the other two hits. LaValley also stole two bases on the day for the Brown and White.

Schaus went the first three innings in the circle allowing all three runs (one earned) to take the loss as she falls to 7-15. Lettire threw the final three innings for the Tigers. Each Princeton hurler allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday when they open up a four game series with Colgate in Lehigh’s final series of the regular season. The teams will play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at Kaufman Field with first pitch on day one on both days set for noon. Saturday’s games will be broadcast online at Lehighsports.com with same day streaming video being available at 3 p.m. Streaming content for Lehigh softball is powered by Yahoo! Sports.
