WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Lisa Sweeney hit her school single-season record setting eighth home run and picked up her 600th career strikeout as Lehigh split a doubleheader at Holy Cross Saturday at Freshman Field. The Mountain Hawks cruised to a 9-2 win in game one, but dropped the nightcap 8-5. Lehigh now stands at 30-12-1 with the split, 10-4 in league games, while Holy Cross is now 6-23 overall, 2-8 in the Patriot League.

In game one Lehigh raced to a 6-0 lead with three runs in each of the first two innings. Freshman Sam Miller put the Mountain Hawks on the scoreboard when she was hit by a pitch with the bases load. Lehigh extended its lead on a RBI single from junior Whitney Lowe and a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Taryn Hanley.

Lehigh used the long ball to extend its lead in the second, as Sweeney drilled a two-run home run with two out, her eighth of the season, and Miller followed up with her third homer of the year to put Lehigh up by six.

Holy Cross scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, while the Mountain Hawks added to their lead on a sixth inning RBI double by freshman Alex Cueva and a two run double by senior Kate Marvel in the seventh.

In the circle, Sweeney held the Crusaders scoreless through five and two-thirds innings, allowing just a walk and two hits, while striking out seven. Her third inning strikeout of Amanda Webster was the 600th of her career. Sweeney improves to 18-3 on the season.

Miller helped propel Lehigh to a strong start in the nightcap, drilling a two-run double to put the Mountain Hawks ahead in the top of the first inning.

Holy Cross answered with a run off freshman Briana Gaumer in the second and the Crusaders took the lead in the third as a pair of Lehigh errors led two a four-run frame which gave Holy Cross a 5-2 lead. Keeley Seniuk put Holy Cross ahead with an RBI single and Amanda Audette followed with a two-run double.

The Mountain Hawks pulled within one at 5-4 in the fourth when Hanley doubled in junior Kristyn Kubiak and Whitney Lowe, but the Crusaders tacked on three more in the sixth on an Erin Fleming RBI double and a two-run homer by Kelly O’Neil.

Gaumer went the first four innings, allowing five runs on nine hits as she falls to 1-2 on the season. Sweeney pitched the final two frames allowing three runs. She also struck out three giving her ten for the day and 606 for her career, just four away from the Patriot League career record.

The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders will wrap-up their four game series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch for game one is set for noon from Freshman Field.
