KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Lehigh opened up action at the Rebel Spring Games with a pair of wins on Sunday, as the Mountain Hawks broke open a couple of close games in the later innings to improve to 6-0 for the first time in school history. In Sunday’s opening game Lehigh utilized an eleven-run fourth inning in a 12-2, five inning triumph over Detroit. Sunday’s second game saw Lehigh score nine runs in the final three innings to knock-off Fairfield 9-1.

Sophomore Amy Piccinich went 3-for-7 at the plate with three RBI and four runs scored in the two games, while freshman Alex Cueva added a pair of RBI doubles, driving in five runs on the day.

In the opening game against Detroit Sunday morning, Lehigh showed terrific patience at the plate, drawing 12 walks from Titans starting pitcher Kelli Short.

Leading 1-0 after three and a half innings, the Mountain Hawks plated 11 runs on just five hits in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Piccinich opened the scoring in the inning with an RBI double. After freshman Sam Miller drew a bases loaded walk to drive in a run, Cueva drilled a two run double to score Piccinich and junior Lisa Sweeney, making it 5-0 Lehigh.

The Brown and White added three more runs on two more bases loaded walks and an error by Short, before Piccinich delivered another RBI hit to make it 9-0. Sophomore Brooke Lewis then followed with a two-run single, and freshman Carly Potock completed the eleven run outburst with a single, as Lehigh sent sixteen players to bat in the frame.

Detroit (0-6) scored its only two runs on a two-out, two run home run from Ellen Sinclair off of Sweeney (3-0). A two-out error meant that both runs were unearned, as Sweeney allowed just three hits and a walk in five innings while striking out eight.

Game two began as a pitchers dual between Lehigh sophomore Tiffany Curtis and Fairfield’s Sarah Minice.

Fairfield took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a walk, sacrifice bunt, passed ball and sacrifice fly; but the lead would be short lived as Lehigh answered with five runs in the top of the fifth.

The Mountain Hawks began the fifth by loading the bases with three consecutive singles. With one out, Piccinich drew a bases loaded walk to tie the score. Sweeney then followed by drawing yet another free pass to bring home Potock with the go-ahead run. The next batter, Cueva, drilled a bases-clearing double to put the Mountain Hawks up 5-0.

Lehigh cemented its sixth straight win to start the season with four runs in the seventh inning, on a two-run Sweeney double, a RBI single from sophomore Lauren Eichblatt and a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Whitney Lowe.

In the circle, Curtis (2-0) fired her second one-hitter in three starts, allowing just a first inning triple to Kristina Lingo while striking out five and walking three.

The Mountain Hawks continue action at the Rebel Spring Games with two more contests on Monday. Lehigh will face La Salle at 11 a.m. before meeting Valparaiso at 3 p.m.
