PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Thomas Shovlin scored a third period pin over Lehigh’s Alex Iacocca to break a 15-15 tie and give No. 25 Penn a 24-15 win over the Mountain Hawks Sunday afternoon at the Palestra. Lehigh won just four of ten bouts, highlighted by Trevor Chinn’s 4-1 tiebreaker victory over No. 14 Cesar Grajales at 149. The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 11-14 (6-2 EIWA) and clinches Lehigh’s first losing dual season since 1996.
The first three bouts of the dual all provided bonus points, as Penn’s Rollie Peterkin won by technical fall over freshman Mitch Berger. Sophomore Seth Ciasulli followed with a fall in 56 seconds at 133 to give Lehigh a 6-5 lead. The pin was Ciasulli’s team-best fifth of the season. The Quakers reclaimed the lead as Rick Rappo won by major decision over Jeff Santo 16-4, at 141.
Chinn needed overtime to pick up his second win over a ranked wrestler in as many weeks. The 20th ranked junior was tied 1-1 with Grajales after regulation and the sudden victory period. Chinn was then able to ride out Grajales in the first sudden victory period, and then escape in the second, before adding a counter takedown in the final seconds for his team leading 23rd win of the year.
Senior Dave Nakasone gave Lehigh a 12-9 lead at the halfway point scoring two takedowns and a reversal in an 8-2 win over Rob Hitschler at 157. Hitschler could have defaulted to give Lehigh three bonus points but battled valiantly to finish the match after being injured on a Nakasone takedown in the second period.
Penn tied the match at 12 at 165 as Zack Shanaman beat sophomore Mike Galante 10-5, but freshman Alex Caruso gave Lehigh the lead again, scoring a third period takedown and then riding out the final seconds to defeat Scott Giffin 3-2 at 174.
The final three bouts all went to the Quakers, as Colin Hitschler held off a late charge from sophomore Manuel Schubert to win 7-5. Iacocca was down in the third period and was being tilted for a nearfall count by Shovlin, when his left shoulder got too close to the mat and referee Jake Llewellyn slapped the mat giving Penn the six team points. Trey
Penn improves to 16-5 (5-1 EIWA) with the win.
Lehigh will wrap up the dual meet season with a trip to Drexel Sunday at 5 p.m. The match will be broadcast online at Lehighsports.com with streaming audio powered by Yahoo! Sports.
