ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After failing to win a match in the morning session, Lehigh rebounded by winning four out of six matches Thursday night at the 2008 NCAA wrestling championships at Scottrade Center. Junior Trevor Chinn, sophomore Seth Ciasulli and freshman Alex Caruso all remain alive in the consolation brackets after winning their matches to put Lehigh on the scoreboard as a team.

Chinn needed to win two matches on Thursday evening and did just that, knocking off Bryce Saddoris of Navy 6-1 on the pigtail consolations before earning a 10-3 win over Matt Fittery of Lock Haven in the first round of consolations. Chinn will face Kurt Kinser of Indiana in Friday morning’s second round consolation at 149.

At 133, Ciasulli picked up his first career NCAA victory in his fourth try, pinning Dan Mitcheff of Kent State in 4:54. After a scoreless first period, Ciasulli turned Mitcheff for two near fall points to open the second. The wrestlers then exchanged reversals, and Ciasulli cranked Mitcheff onto his back with a power half for his eighth fall this season. Ciasulli will next face No. 10 seed Pat Castillo of Northern Illinois.

Caruso also nabbed his first NCAA tournament win, scoring takedowns in the first and second period to defeat Josh Patterson of Binghamton 5-3 at 174. Next up for Caruso is Chance Litton of West Virginia.

Senior Dave Nakasone and sophomore Manuel Schubert both lost their consolation bouts, and were eliminated from the tournament with 0-2 records. Nakasone converted a takedown in the third period to force sudden victory versus Matt Moley of Bloomsburg, but Moley scored a takedown in the overtime period to earn a 6-4 win at 157, eliminating the EIWA Champion.

Schubert again fought hard in his consolation at 184, but a first period takedown proved to be the difference as Jacob Devlin of Air Force knocked him out with 3-2 decision.

In the team standings, Lehigh earned five points on the evening and sits in a tie for 33rd with Cal State Fullerton and Rider, half a point behind Oklahoma. Iowa leads the team race with 29.5 points followed by Nebraska (26.5), Iowa State (25), Central Michigan (24) and Minnesota (24).

The 2008 NCAA wrestling championships continue Friday at 10 a.m. CDT with the championship quarterfinals and two rounds of consolations. All the Lehigh action can be heard live for free on Lehighsports.com. Streaming audio for Lehigh wrestling is powered by Yahoo! Sports.
