ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Lehigh’s wrestling season came to an end Friday afternoon in the consolation rounds of the NCAA Championships at Scottrade Center. All three Mountain Hawks who survived day one, were eliminated the consolations. Freshman Alex Caruso had the furthest advancement, winning his second round consolation on Friday before being eliminated one win shy of earning the chance to wrestle for All-America honors in the round of 12.

Caruso advanced to the third round of consolations with a 2-1 win over Chance Litton of West Virginia in the second round of consolations at 174. Caruso earned a second period escape and a penalty point for an illegal body slam by Litton.

In the third round of consolations, Caruso faced No. 9 seed Brandon Mason of Oklahoma State. Mason secured a second period escape and then rode out the third period to eliminate Caruso by a 2-0 score. Caruso finishes his freshman season with a 26-14 record.

Sophomore Seth Ciasulli (133) and junior Trevor Chinn (149) were both knocked out in the second round of consolations. Ciasulli had a pair of first period takedowns and led No. 10 seed Patrick Castillo of Northern Illinois 4-1 after one period, but yielded a takedown at the end of the second period and a four-point move in the third, as Castillo rallied for a 9-6 decision.

Chinn also fell behind on a third period four-point move in his match against Kurt Kinser of Indiana, however, Chinn scored a late third period takedown and held a riding time advantage which forced overtime, but in the sudden victory period, Chinn was penalized for grabbing Kinser’s headgear, and the penalty point gave Kinser a 6-5 win.

The Mountain Hawks finish the tournament with 5.5 team points, and failed to crown an All-American for the second straight year; the first time a Lehigh team has had no All-Americans in consecutive years for the first time since the Brown and White failed to medal in six straight tournaments from 1941-1953.

Lehigh’s season has come to an end, but the NCAA Championships continue Friday night with the championship semifinals and round of 12 matches from Scottrade Center.
