LAS VEGAS – Six Lehigh wrestlers advanced to day two of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, surviving a lengthy day of wrestling Friday at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Three Mountain Hawks: juniors Matt Fisk (133) and Seth Ciasulli (141) and senior Trevor Chinn (149) reached the quarterfinals at their respective weight classes to lead the Lehigh effort. All three however, were beaten in Friday night’s quarterfinals and will join junior Mike Galante (165) and freshmen Sean Bilodeau (157) and Joe Kennedy (197) in wrestling for a spot in the top eight on Saturday morning.
The Mountain Hawks finished day one in 20th place in the 48 team field with 33 team points.
Ciasulli had arguably the most impressive championship-bracket win on the day for Lehigh, as the No. 12 seed Mountain Hawk made the most of a first period takedown in a 4-3 win over No. 5 seed Andre Hernandez of Indiana in the second round. Ciasulli fell 7-3 to Arizona State’s No. 4 seed Chris Drouin and will face Filip Novachkov of Cal Poly in Saturday’s first round of consolations.
Fisk, seeded sixth at 133, cruised into the quarters with three wins, including a major decision and a technical fall, but ran into Boise State’s Andrew Hochstrasser, who prevailed 5-1. Fisk will face Thomas Kimbrell of Cal State Bakersfield in the Round of 12 on Saturday.
Chinn, like Fisk had to wrestle a pigtail round bout and put together three straight wins, before falling to top seed Darrion Caldwell of N.C. State 7-2 in the quarterfinals. Chinn will face Walter Peppelman of Harvard in the placement round.
The No. 11 seed at 157, Bilodeau has given the Mountain Hawks a boost with bonus points, as he picked up a pair of wins by fall in the consolations, both coming against foes from the Big Ten. Bilodeau pinned Colton Salazar of Purdue in the final minute, then led Grant Paswall of Illinois 7-0, before going down 8-7 and eventually battling back to secure a fall in 4:56. Bilodeau won his opening round match before losing by decision to Jason Johnstone of Ohio State. He will face No. 5 seed Chase Pami of Cal Poly on Saturday morning.
Galante, the No. 8 seed at 165, started his day with two wins by decision, but dropped his round of 16 match with Wisconsin’s Andrew Howe 2-1 in the tiebreakers, with the deciding point coming on a stalling penalty in the first 30 second tiebreak period. He was able to wrestle back with a pair of bonus wins and will next face Tyler Sherfey of Boise State in the placement round.
Kennedy, seeded eighth at 197, remains alive after wins by decision over opponents from West Virginia and Minnesota in the wrestle backs. In his second round wrestle back versus the Mountaineers’ Brandon Boyer, Kennedy trailed 6-2 after one period but rallied back to win 8-6. Kennedy will face Matt Wilps of Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Lehigh began the day with just eight entrants after sophomore Alex Caruso did not make the trip and freshman heavyweight Zach Rey was a late scratch due to a skin infection.
At 125, freshman John McDonald bowed out following one win in three bouts, beating Paul Galinpeau of Sacred Heart 9-3 in the first round. McDonald was eliminated following losses to Cornell’s Frank Perrelli (10-3) and Bucknell’s Derek Reber (10-1).
The day’s biggest surprise was at 184 where junior David Craig dropped a pair of two two-point matches to be eliminated early in the tournament.
After one day, Nebraska leads the team race with 74 points. Minnesota, Boise State, Pittsburgh and Indiana round out the top five.
The Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational continues Saturday morning at 9 a.m. (PST) with the placement round. All six remaining Lehigh wrestlers will be in action in the morning session and can earn spots in the top eight with victories.
