BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Andy Coen along with All-American senior punter Jason Leo gathered at the Copperhead Grille on Airport Road in Allentown on Wednesday to discuss the Mountain Hawks upcoming game with Georgetown. Lehigh wraps up its three-game road trip on Saturday versus the Hoyas in the nation’s capital at Multi-Sport Field.
Below is the transcript from Wednesday’s luncheon.
LEHIGH HEAD COACH ANDY COEN
On last week’s game against Holy Cross: “It was disappointing, primarily in regard to how we came out and started the game, allowing Holy Cross to score the first three times they had the football and put us in a 21-0 hole. It’s hard against any football team, let alone a team that’s as talented as Holy Cross, to get down 21-0. But again it came down to a situation where we had every opportunity to win in the fourth quarter and we were unable to get that done.”
On playing Georgetown this Saturday: “We’ve approached every one of these games within the Patriot League as championships within themselves, and Saturday is no different. I really don’t care what Georgetown’s record is, so we’re just approaching this one at a time. We’ll go down to Georgetown and do our best to come away with a victory there and then move on from there.”
On whether or not the Hoyas are an improved football team: “I think they are – from a talent standpoint – better than they were a year ago. I think they’re more physical, they’ve played some young kids over the past couple years and they’re developing. They’ve gotten more athletic at their skill positions.”
On the performance by senior defensive back Quadir Carter at Holy Cross: “He just played one of the finest games I’ve seen him play. He was a little dinged up early in the season, but he’s really settled in. The last two weeks he’s played very good football, and we’re certainly going to need that out of Quadir the rest of the season.”
On if his team is tired of traveling on road trips: “We’re getting tired of coming home on the busses the last two weeks and feeling bad, but hopefully we’ll change that this week. You have to travel. You have 11 games and you only get so many at home. We’ve had three in a row (on the road) and I know some people have more than that in a row.”
LEHIGH SENIOR PUNTER/KICKER JASON LEO
On how the team is feeling after the loss to Holy Cross: “Obviously you don’t want to lose the game. You could tell a lot of the guys were disappointed after the game and on Sunday, when we watched the film, guys were upset when they saw the mistakes they were making. But by the time Monday and Tuesday comes around everybody is upbeat and everybody is ready to go and get back on the field. The mood of the team is very positive and we’re staying positive. We don’t let what happens in the past affect us in the games on Saturday.”
The Mountain Hawks and Hoyas will get things started at 1:00 on Saturday from Multi-Sport Field in Washington, D.C. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM as well as Lehighsports.com with pre-game coverage getting underway at noon with Matt Kerr, Kody Fedorcha ’00 and Matt Markus. There is no television coverage for Saturday’s game.
