Virginia knocks off Lehigh 27-9 at Virginia Duals

1/12/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

HAMPTON, Va. – Lehigh’s run through the consolation brackets at the Virginia Duals came to an end on Saturday evening as the Mountain Hawks fell to Virginia 27-9 in the third round of consolations at the Hampton Coliseum. The Cavaliers won seven bouts en route to their second win over Lehigh this season. The Mountain Hawks finish the Virginia Duals with a 2-2 record and stand at 7-11 overall.

The swing bout in the dual was a multi-overtime battle between sophomore Mike Galante of Lehigh and freshman Michael Chaires of Virginia. With the Cavaliers leading 9-6 after five bouts, Galante and Chaires were deadlocked at one after regulation and at two after the first set of overtimes. In the second sudden victory, Galante shot a strong double leg attack but could not convert the takedown, and the bout went into the second tiebreaker series, with riding time now coming into play. Chaires escaped in the first 30 second period, but Galante had built a 31 second riding time advantage. Needing an escape to try to win on riding time, Galante was unable to do so in the second 30 second period, and Chaires held on 3-2, starting a run of four straight Cavalier victories.

Virginia’s Chris Henrich avenged an earlier loss to freshman Alex Caruso with a 3-0 victory, before nationally ranked Rocco Caponi (184) and Brent Jones (197) delivered back to back falls to put the dual out of reach.

After falling behind 9-0, junior Trevor Chinn mustered Lehigh’s first win of the match, riding out the second period and then escaping early in the third to defeat Shawn Harris 2-0 at 149. Chinn was undefeated in four bouts this weekend. Senior Dave Nakasone pulled Lehigh within three points with a 3-2 win over Drew DiPasquale at 157. Sophomore Justin Allen had the Mountain Hawks third and final win, a 4-1 decision over John Danilkowicz at heavyweight.

“We were just off a step,” said Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel. “They were hot as a team and we weren’t. There were a lot of close matches, but we came up short in a few of them.”

Earlier in the day, Lehigh defeated Rider 21-11 to remain alive in the consolation bracket.

“I was pleased with the performance against Rider,” Strobel said. “We wrestled well, and really hustled, and even the bouts we didn’t win a few of them were very close.”

The Mountain Hawks will return to the mats on Saturday January 19 when they put their 3-0 EIWA dual record on the line against No. 22 Navy. The match gets underway at 7 p.m. from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME or by visiting the Lehigh ticket office, located in Grace Hall.
