Mountain Hawks top Rider in consolation round

1/12/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

HAMPTON, Va. – Lehigh picked up its second straight win in the consolation bracket at the Virginia Duals, winning six bouts in a 21-11 win over Rider Saturday morning at Hampton Coliseum. Sophomore Seth Ciasulli, junior Trevor Chinn and freshman Alex Caruso led the way for the Brown and White with wins by major decision, as the Mountain Hawks improve to 7-10 in duals and move on to face Virginia in the next round of consolations.

Ciasulli gave Lehigh the lead after freshman Mitch Berger lost a close 6-4 decision to Tommy Lorenzo at 125. Ciasulli took down Mitch Fenton in the first and rode out. In the second period, he turned him twice for a total of five near fall points, and added two more two-point near falls in the third to win 12-0. Ciasulli’s win started a string of four in a row for Lehigh.

Senior Jeff Santo bounced back from a rough Friday with an 8-5 win over Fred Rodgers, and then Chinn followed up with a 10-1 major of Dustin Renelt at 149. A wild bout ensued at 157 with senior Dave Nakasone facing Rob Morrison. Nakasone trailed 7-4 after one and 8-6 after two. In the third period he reversed Morrison and gained riding time, which was enough to send the bout into sudden victory, where he secured the winning takedown 40 seconds in.

Rider claimed an overtime win of its own at 165 as Jason Lapham reversed Mike Galante and gained a two point near fall in the first 30 second tiebreak. Caruso however, put Lehigh up by 12 after seven bouts, racking up nine takedowns in a 20-7 major decision over Joe Ferber.

The Broncs needed bonus points to attempt a comeback, but Lehigh did well to deny them. At 184, Kadeem Samuels fell 5-4 to Michael Darling, with the winning points coming on an escape in the final seconds. In the following bout T.J. Morrison had nearly five minutes of riding time, but could not turn sophomore Alex Iacocca and had to settle for a 7-1 decision. Rider was docked a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of the bout.

At heavyweight, Justin Allen sealed the win, scoring a second period reversal, and gaining riding time in the third in a 3-2 triumph over Ed Bordas.

The Mountain Hawks will now wrestle Virginia, who eliminated Lock Haven earlier in the day. That match will get underway at 4 p.m. and can be heard live on Lehighsports.com. Lehigh will be looking to avenge a 23-12 loss to the Cavaliers at the Journeymen Duals in November.
