Lehigh edges Bison to stay alive at Virginia Duals

1/11/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

HAMPTON, Va. – Lehigh remains alive in the consolation bracket after day one of the 28th Virginia Duals. The Mountain Hawks dropped their opening round match to No. 2 seed and 17th ranked Illinois 29-3 Friday afternoon, but rebounded later in the day to advance past EIWA rival Bucknell on a criteria decision after the teams wrestled to a 15-15 tie. Lehigh is now 6-10 on the dual season, including a 3-0 mark in EIWA duals heading into Saturday’s second round consolation match against Rider.

In its first round consolation versus Bucknell, Lehigh split the ten bouts with the Bison. The deciding factor was number of major decisions won, and sophomore Alex Iacocca’s 15-6 major decision win over Charlie Wonsettler proved to be the deciding criteria that allowed Lehigh to advance.

After six bouts, Lehigh and Bucknell were deadlocked at nine apiece. Sophomore Seth Ciasulli led the charge with a 6-2 victory over 16th ranked David Marble at 133. Junior Trevor Chinn added a win by decision over Kevin LaValley at 149, and senior Dave Nakasone converted a takedown 24 seconds into sudden victory to defeat Brantley Hooks 3-1.

At 174, Lehigh reclaimed the lead as freshman Alex Caruso was dominant, rolling up five takedowns in a 13-6 win over Rob Waltko. The Mountain Hawks however, were docked a team point after the bout for unsportsmanlike conduct against Caruso, and led just 11-9 with three bouts remaining.

Freshman Kadeem Samuels was beaten 6-0 by Bucknell’s Shane Riccio to give the Bison a one point lead in the dual, but Iacocca answered the call on his birthday, with six takedowns including the final one in the waning seconds of the third period to secure the major.

Needing a win at heavyweight to cement the dual, sophomore Justin Allen fell 5-2 to George Hingson, creating the 15-15 tie and after review; Lehigh was declared the winner by way of fifth criteria (most major decisions).

“There’s still a lot of work to be done,” said Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel. “We’re making progress, but the mental mistakes almost cost us against Bucknell. The good news is, we got a good effort from Iacocca who gets a major on his birthday, and I’ve seen some good wrestling out of some unexpected guys; Iacocca, and even guys like Berger and Samuels who fought hard and lost close matches. Plus Ciasulli went out and beat a ranked guy in Marble that was good to see.”

Earlier in the day, Lehigh dropped nine of ten bouts to Illinois, with Chinn delivering the Mountain Hawks’ only team points with a 9-4 decision over Joey Kotowski. Illinois scored bonus points in just one of its nine wins, but managed to pull out all the close bouts to advance.

The Mountain Hawks will wrestle Saturday morning in the second round of consolations against No. 8 seed Rider. That match begins at 10 a.m. and will be broadcast online at Lehighsports.com. A Lehigh victory would pit the Brown and White against the Oregon State-Virginia winner at 4 p.m., while a loss would eliminate the Mountain Hawks from the tournament.
