Lehigh rallies past Georgetown in overtime

9/8/2007 1:00:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Kara Zweizig scored four minutes into overtime to propel Lehigh to a 5-4 win over Georgetown Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game was a see-saw affair with each team unable to hold a second half lead. Junior Kalynn Davies netted a hat trick, including the game tying goal with 25 seconds remaining in regulation, as the Mountain Hawks improved to 2-3 on the season, while the Hoyas fall to 1-4.

Davies gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game as she blasted a long drive past Dee Crovo off a penalty corner, with Zweizig and senior Marny Hearn adding assists on the play. Georgetown tied the game 12 minutes later when Lindsay Moramarco netted an unassisted goal.

The game went to halftime tied at one, and with the teams even at 11 shots apiece.

Lehigh appeared to take control of the game in the second half, as Davies netted her second goal of the game in the 40th minute, and then four minutes later, Christy Smith scored on a three-on-one rush for her first goal of the season, to put Lehigh up 3-1.

Georgetown refused to go quietly, scoring three straight goals, including a pair from Katie Lachman to take the lead with 10 minutes to play.

The Mountain Hawks finally tied the game after earning a pair of penalty corners in the final minute when Davies tipped in Kelly Fox’s centering pass for her third goal of the game and fourth of the season.

In overtime, Lehigh mustered the only shot, with Zweizig beating Crovo from the center of the scoring circle.

“We showed a lot of character today,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “We had a strong start, but our undisciplined play at times allowed Georgetown back the game. Fortunately we came out well and took care of our opportunities in overtime.”

The Hoyas finished with a 22-19 advantage in shots and an 11-7 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman Jessica Miller made 12 saves in the goal cage for the Brown and White.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the turf on Wednesday when they visit St. Francis. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from Loretto, Pa.
