Mountain Hawks down Fairfield for first win

9/5/2007 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Lehigh picked up its first win of the season with a convincing 3-1 road triumph over Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks dominated statistically, out shooting the Stags 18-4 on the afternoon and holding a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners, as Lehigh improved to 1-3 on the season. Fairfield fell to 1-4 with the setback.

“We worked hard out there,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “We took good care of the ball today and really took advantage of the opportunities that were presented to us. Some of the things that held us back in previous games we were able to improve on, mainly because we possessed the ball well all game.”

Junior Kalynn Davies gave the Mountain Hawks the lead ten minutes into the contest as she shot a rebound past Stags goalkeeper Elizabeth Thomas for her first goal of the season. Lehigh held a 10-1 first half advantage in shots, and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime.

The Mountain Hawks extended their lead three minutes into the second half, as sophomore Kelly Fox fed junior Kara Zweizig, who netted her second goal of the year to give Lehigh a two-goal advantage.

Fairfield cut the Lehigh lead to one as Ashton DiDonato scored with just over 12 minutes to play, however the Mountain Hawks answered less than a minute later, as freshman Cassie Willard scored her first collegiate goal to put Lehigh back up by two.

The three goals and 18 shots were both season highs for the Mountain Hawks. Senior Christy Smith took seven of the 18 shots, while Davies was credited with four shots on the afternoon.

Freshman Jessica Miller made a pair of saves in the goal cage to earn her first career win. Thomas did her part to keep the Stags close, sending back 11 shots.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday when they return home to face Georgetown. Game time is set for noon from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
