BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Trailing by two goals with just over six minutes to play, Lehigh rallied to force overtime with two late goals, and senior Christy Smith’s unassisted goal five minutes into the extra session lifted the Mountain Hawks to a 3-2 win over Bucknell in the Patriot League opener for both teams, Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the victory, Lehigh improves to 5-5 on the season, and 1-0 in the Patriot League, while Bucknell falls to 6-4, 0-1 in league games.

“I’m pleased with the way everyone played,” said head coach Julie Mazer. “We did some really nice things out there, and with a home win, that’s exactly how we wanted to start league play.”

The Mountain Hawks out shot Bucknell 7-2 in the opening half but found themselves behind 2-0 at halftime as the Bison scored on both of their shot attempts in the first half. Trina Boyer gave Bucknell the lead three and a half minutes into the game when she scored her sixth goal of the season on a feed from Megan Krebs. Eight minutes later, Morgan Kauffman added an unassisted goal to make it 2-0.

“We talked about being unfazed and undeterred when things don’t go our way,” said Mazer. “We stayed the course, and were able to come back.”

Lehigh finally got on the scoreboard with 6:15 to play as sophomore Lindsey Smith shot a rebound past Bison goalkeeper Jessie Atieh for her fourth goal of the season. Smith scored a goal for the third consecutive game, while sophomore Kelly Fox picked up her team leading fifth assist of the season.

Four minutes later, Lehigh pulled even off a penalty corner, as junior Kalynn Davies scored on a long drive off of a penalty corner, her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Senior Marny Hearn and junior Kara Zweizig added assists on the play.

The Mountain Hawks controlled possession in the overtime and had the only two shots of the extra period. Christy Smith delivered the game winner at the 4:48 mark of the first overtime, as she intercepted a Bucknell clearance attempt, dribbled into the scoring circle, around Atieh, and snuck a shot inside the near post to give Lehigh the come-from-behind victory.

For the game, Lehigh held a commanding 16-4 advantage in shots, and an equally impressive 12-1 edge in penalty corners. Freshman Jess Miller made one save for the Mountain Hawks, while Atieh made three stops for the Bison.

Lehigh will return to the turf next Saturday, when the Mountain Hawks visit arch rival Lafayette. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from Easton, Pa.
