Lehigh wins two, loses two at Journeymen Duals

TROY, N.Y. – After two losses earlier in the day, Lehigh bounced back with a pair of victories on Saturday to finish competition at the Journeyman/Brute Northeast Duals with a 2-2 record. The Mountain Hawks won seven of ten bouts to defeat Binghamton 35-10 for their first win, and then erased a 15-3 deficit by winning the final five bouts in a 21-15 win over Clarion. Lehigh dropped its first two duals, losing 21-13 to Virginia and then 39-0 to No. 9 Central Michigan.

Junior Trevor Chinn, freshman Alex Caruso and sophomore Justin Allen all earned three wins on the day, while sophomore David Craig won two matches by fall for the Mountain Hawks, who now stand at 2-4 on the dual season.

Lehigh was able to rebound against the Bearcats, picking up three wins by fall and a pair of major decisions. After a Lehigh loss at 125, junior Kevin Vinh hit a cement mixer on Leigh Tobias and secured the Mountain Hawks first fall of the day in 1:22. Caruso and Craig added back-to-back falls later in the dual. Lehigh also received major decisions from Chinn, who rolled up five takedowns in a 13-3 win over Brandon Toro-Segarra at 149, and sophomore Mike Galante, who won 14-3 over Brett Nelson at 165.

Things looked grim in the final dual of the day, as the Golden Eagles picked up a win by fall at 125 and built a 12-0 lead after three bouts. Chinn put Lehigh on the scoreboard with a decision at 149. After senior Dave Nakasone was beaten at 157, Lehigh won the final five bouts to clinch the dual. Galante and Caruso delivered identical 13-6 decisions, and Craig’s second period pin of Scott Joseph tied the dual at 15. Sophomore Alex Iacocca gave Lehigh the lead, with a 5-2 decision over Dixon Jordan at 197. Allen then clinched the victory securing a late escape and riding time to defeat Roman Husam 5-4 at heavyweight.

Earlier in the day the Cavaliers built an 11-0 lead after three bouts as Ross Gitomer won by technical fall over freshman Mitch Berger, and then Vinh and senior Jeff Santo lost decisions. The following five bouts were all decided by two points or less. The Mountain Hawks received a 3-1 sudden victory win from Chinn at 149 and a 2-0 win by senior Dave Nakasone over Drew DiPasquale. Caruso earned a 2-1 decision over Chris Heinrich at 174, but at 184, Craig gave up a takedown in the final seconds to fall 3-1 to Rocco Caponi in a battle of nationally ranked wrestlers.

In the second dual of the day, Central Michigan cruised behind its six nationally ranked wrestlers. Four of the Chippewas ten wins were of the bonus variety. Chinn went into sudden victory for the second time in as many duals, but this time was defeated 3-1 by Brandon Carter. Craig also had his hands full with another nationally ranked 184 pound wrestler, and fell 5-2 to Christian Sinnott. Freshman Kellen Aura lost his varsity dual debut by major decision 13-1 to Luke Smith at 125, while deferred freshman Nate Spangler was a loser by technical fall in his season debut at 141. The loss marked the first time Lehigh has been shutout since a 44-0 blanking at Oregon State in December, 1995.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the mats on Friday when they host Rutgers in their first EIWA dual of the season.
