The wrestle-offs began with the heavyweights, and sophomore Justin Allen, the number one pick in the draft, gave the White team a 6-0 lead as he built a 13-1 lead before pinning junior Samir Soriano in the second period. The fall was the first of two in the night’s first three bouts as junior captain Matt Fisk wasted little time, pinning fifth-year newcomer Greg Wolbrette in 1:07, in the third bout of the evening.
The night’s second bout was a match-up of true freshmen at 125, with
In the second of two bouts at 133, junior Kevin Vinh scored a takedown in sudden victory to knock-off 14th-ranked sophomore Seth Ciasulli 3-1 in the first of three overtime bouts of the evening.
The next two bouts featured wins by major decision as freshman Kyle Rosser rolled over junior Steve Seemuller 10-0 at 141, and junior Trevor Chinn turned on the offense in the second and third periods, defeating freshman Greg Hilbert 13-2 at 149.
Another battle of true freshman took place at 157 as both Sean Bilodeau and Ben Marich looked strong. Bilodeau found more points in the end and earned a 13-7 victory.
Two potential starters matched up at 165 with sophomore Mike Galante utilizing an early takedown and 2:16 riding time advantage to beat senior Dave Nakasone 4-3. Even though the bout was contested at 165, Nakasone is still expected to start at 157, with Galante manning 165 for the Brown and White.
A second overtime bout took place in the second 165 match-up, with freshman Brian Tanen scoring the winning takedown to defeat sophomore David Chirichello 3-1.
The night’s final three bouts were all high scoring. Freshman Alex Caruso rolled up five takedowns and a 1:36 time advantage to earn a 13-5 major decision over senior Eddy Silverman at 174. Sophomore Manuel Schubert converted a takedown at the buzzer to force sudden victory, and then scored another to win over freshman Kadeem Samuels 10-8. The final bout of the night went to sophomore Alex Iacocca, who broke open a one point bout with a second period reversal, takedown and two point near fall, and went on to defeat junior newcomer Jamie O’Dowd 15-10.
“I’m pleased with the way things went tonight,” said Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel. “Our guys have been waiting for three weeks to get ready for tonight. I really liked the fight our guys showed. I liked the way they really went out and competed, and hopefully we can build on this momentum, and the guys will come out fighting hard when we open the regular season. “
The Mountain Hawks will open the regular season on Sunday November 11, when they welcome the No. 20 Pittsburgh Panthers to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The match gets underway at 1 p.m. and tickets may be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME or by visiting Lehighsports.com.
