Mountain Hawks fall 2-0 at first place American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Lehigh suffered its second straight Patriot League loss as the Mountain Hawks fell 2-0 to first place American Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field. The Mountain Hawks held a commanding 25-6 advantage in shots, but two American goals in the 30th minute proved to be the difference in the game. Lehigh falls to 5-5-2 overall, 1-3 in the Patriot League, while the Eagles improve to 6-7-2, 3-0-1 in league games.

 

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead at the 29:11 mark after being awarded a penalty kick, Philip Purdy beat freshman Jonathan Nydell, who was making his first career appearance for the Mountain Hawks.

 

American wasted no time extending its lead, as Jake Van Yahres took a pass from Mark Wysocki and fired a quick shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

 

The Mountain Hawks pressed for offense in the second half, firing 16 shots in the second 45 minutes, but were unable to beat Chris Sedlak, who made seven saves to earn the shutout. Sophomores Kyle Evans and Adam Welch were credited with eight shots apiece, with five of Welch’s shots being on goal. Lehigh also enjoyed a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, and where whistled for nine fouls, compared to 16 for the Eagles, but were unable to avoid suffering its third straight loss.

 

Nydell was credited with one save for Lehigh in his first collegiate start.

 

Lehigh will return to the pitch on Wednesday night when the Mountain Hawks wrap up their four game road trip at Columbia. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from New York.
