Lehigh falls 3-1 in hard fought battle with Colgate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh put up a valiant effort against the second place Colgate Raiders, but was unable to hold on for a win, falling 3-1, Friday night in Bethlehem. The game scores were 25-30, 30-25, 30-24 and 30-21. The Mountain Hawks fall to 4-16 (1-7) on the season, while Colgate improves its record to 12-9 (7-1). Shannon Spafford led the Lehigh attack, recording a match high 19 kills and hitting a team best .389.
The Brown and White put forth one of its finest efforts of the season in the first game, beating Colgate 30-25. As a team Lehigh hit .531, while only committing two errors. Brittany Thurston led the Mountain Hawks with seven kills and added one block and five digs on the defensive side.
Colgate fired back in the second game led by Katrina Zawojski with six kills, three digs and a block. Unlike its first game, Lehigh could not keep the perfect play up, as it committed seven errors and hit .194.
The teams battled back and forth in the third game, with the Raiders coming out on top 30-24. Erin Kanetzke recorded five kills in the game for Colgate, who was able to escape with the win despite committing nine errors.
In the final game, the Raiders just looked too strong for Lehigh as they came on out on top with a 30-21 victory. Colgate saved its best game for last, hitting .343, while committing just four errors. The Raiders were also able to take advantage of Lehigh’s 12 errors and .023 hitting percentage.
Lehigh ended up with three players in double digit kills, led by Spafford, who also contributed eight digs and four blocks. Brittany Thurston had a double-double, with 14 kills and 14 digs, while Mo McReynolds added another 16 kills, hitting .306 for the match.
The Raiders had four players with double digit kills led by Katrina Zawojski and Casey Ritt with 17 each. Meghan Fanta added a match high 54 assists in the effort for Colgate.
It was just the second home loss of the season for Lehigh, who will try to bring its record back above .500 at home tomorrow when Bucknell visits. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. from Taylor Gym.
