“It feels good to get a league win and on the board,” said head coach Sue Troyan. “We played with a good effort, and although it was not our best, it was enough to win. It is critical at this point to get a league win and we only expect to build on it.”
Following a little more than two minutes of scoreless action to open the game, sophomore Haly Crites’ jumper gave Lehigh a 2-0 lead. Colgate would get a lay-up to tie the game and took a 4-2 lead off a Melanie Cargle lay-up at the 15:38 mark.
The score would remain tight for the next four minutes before senior Sara Ellis’ three-pointer sparked an 8-0 run to give the Mountain Hawks a 16-8 advantage. Colgate rallied, eventually making it a two-point game off a jumper by Cargle with 8:08 remaining. However, Lehigh rebuilt its lead, closing the first half with a 31-23 lead. It was the first time the Mountain Hawks scored at least 30 first half points since playing Gardner-Webb.
Lehigh’s offense came out strong in the second half with sophomore Melissa Rich hitting a jumper, while drawing the foul just 12 seconds into the half. The Mountain Hawks would eventually build a 19-point lead off an Ellis jumper, making the score 44-25 with 15:12 remaining.
Colgate began to cut into that deficit, reeling off seven straight Katie Garman points to make the score 45-34 at the 11:36 mark. Lehigh continued to increase its lead, establishing a 16-point cushion with just less ten minutes as Rich sank a free throw.
The Raiders attempted to cut into their second major deficit of the second half, but could not get any closer than nine points.
In addition to Rich, senior Sara Ellis, sophomore Haly Crites and freshman Alex Ross all reached double-digits in points. For Crites, her ten points is a new career-high, the second time in the last two weeks that she has recorded a new career-high. Meanwhile, Rich and senior Adrienne Blount grabbed a game-high eight boards.
Cargle scored a game-high 22 points, while Gretchen Polinski pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
