Mountain Hawks roll over American 4-0

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh remained perfect in league play as the Mountain Hawks rolled past American on Saturday evening with a 4-0 victory at the Ulrich Sports Complex behind four points from freshman Kyle Evans and an additional three from sophomore Jim Taranto.  With the win, the Mountain Hawks, ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, improve to 8-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Patriot League play, while the Eagles fall to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league action.

“I’m always surprised when we get that type of offensive output in a league game,” explained head coach Dean Koski.  “We had a lot of guys step up tonight and our pressure was very good, but I don’t think the final outcome was indicative of how good a team American really is.”

Lehigh got on the board first when Evans netted his third goal of the season on a pass from Robert Quinlan at the 17:09 mark of the opening half.  Taranto then added to the lead with his fourth score of the season at the 24:30 mark and Lehigh would take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Pat Starsinic netted his second score of the season off of an assist from Taranto on a nice lead pass up the right side as the Brown and White went in front by a trio of goals. Jesse Schram then iced the victory with a score of his own off an assist from Evans.  Lehigh was out shot 18-14 on the evening and had just two corner kicks to American’s six.  There were 20 total fouls whistled in the match, 11 on the Mountain Hawks and nine on the visitors.

Senior Jim Morahan was once again spectacular in goal for the Brown and White sending back seven shots on the evening, while two American net minders combined for four saves on the night.

“I hope this win gives us confidence, but we do not want to get overconfident,” Koski said.  He adds, “Our boys need to remember however, that we are not in the playoffs yet.”

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday evening when the Mountain Hawks play host to regional foe Villanova at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is set for 7:00 and all of the action can be heard and seen live on lehighsports.com with Steve Lomangino and former Mountain Hawk standout Jim Stevens ’06.
