WEST POINT, N.Y. – Lehigh was able to play all of its players in Sunday afternoon’s game as the Mountain Hawks defeated the Army Black Knights 5-0 in order to extend their unbeaten streak to nine games and get their eighth shutout of the season.  Five different players found the back of the net for the Mountain Hawks, who maintain sole possession of first place in the Patriot League.  The Mountain Hawks, ranked No. 4 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, improves to 9-1-1 on the season and 4-0 in the Patriot League, while Army drops to 3-8-1 and 0-4 in league play.

“It was a very good result on the road against a tough conference opponent,” said head coach Dean Koski.  “We went into halftime with a 2-0 lead, but I did not think we controlled the game.  The guys came back out in the second half and got those quick goals to seal the game for us.  It was a solid Patriot League win.  We were solid on both sides of the ball and it was a whole team effort.”

Senior backs Joe Verdi and John O’Reilly gave the Mountain Hawks their 2-0 first half lead.  Verdi earned his second goal of the season and the third of his career when he banged in the rebound that came from freshman Kyle Evans’ shot in the 19th minute.  An Army foul in the 31st minute set the Mountain Hawks up for a 35-yard direct kick.  Sophomore Adam Gazda found O’Reilly, who headed the ball into the goal from ten yards out.

Sophomore Jim Taranto further increased the Mountain Hawks’ lead in the 49th minute when junior Mike Hessemer sent a long ball from Lehigh’s defensive end to Taranto, which created a breakaway for Taranto.  Freshman Jesse Schram scored his third goal of the season when he collected a loose ball and ripped a shot from 15 yards out.  Junior Joe Clemente scored the game’s final goal in the 70th minute off a feed from Schram.

Senior Jim Morahan and freshmen Chris Varga and Kyle Grezeszczak all saw time defending Lehigh’s goal.  Morahan played in 65:10 of the game and recorded one save.  Varga saw 13:20 of action and notched one save, while Grezeszczak played in the final 11:30 and earned one save.

Although Lehigh outshot the Black Knights 15-7, Army held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks and recorded four saves in the match.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Wednseday when they travel to Adelphi for their final afternoon game of the season.  Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
