LEWISBURG,
The Brown and White took an early lead off of a penalty corner in the ninth minute. Junior Christy Smith drove the ball into the back of the cage for her third goal of the season, with senior Moira Garrity assisting on the play. Lehigh’s lead was short-lived however, as the Bison tied things off a penalty corner, with Amanda Faust being credited with the goal.
The game remained tied into the second half when freshman Morgan Christopher put the Mountain Hawks ahead for good by tapping home a rebound in front for her second goal of the season. Sophomore Kara Zweizig added an insurance goal with under five minutes to play, deflecting home a Terry Mongan free hit for her team-leading fourth of the season, to close out the scoring as the Mountain Hawks won their Patriot League opener for the second year in a row.
“I’m very proud of the way we played today,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “It was really a team effort. Everyone contributed, the defense played well, we moved the ball well and were able to capitalize on our chances.”
Lehigh out shot Bucknell 10-9 on the afternoon and had eight penalty corners to seven for the Bison.
Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Palmieri made seven saves for Lehigh, while Bucknell’s Emily Groendyke made five stops.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Wednesday night when the Broncs of Rider visit the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
