Mountain Hawks edged by La Salle in OT

9/22/2006 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh’s defense did its part, keeping La Salle off the scoreboard for over 70 minutes, but the Mountain Hawks could not muster a goal of their own and ultimately fell to the Explorers 1-0 in overtime Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. La Salle’s Amy Comstock netted the only goal of the game just over three minutes into the overtime period, sending the Brown and White to their third consecutive defeat as it falls to 2-5. The Explorers improve to 3-7 with the victory.

The opening 35 minutes featured little from both sides. The Mountain Hawks mustered the only two shots of the half, both by junior Christy Smith.

In the second half, La Salle was able to create more chances, but the Lehigh defense continued its strong play, stopping nine shots and fending off eight penalty corners.

The Mountain Hawks had two quality chances in overtime, but failed to convert on a penalty corner as well as a 2-on-1 fast break opportunity. Comstock scored the game winning goal at the 73:06 mark when she slipped a shot past Lehigh senior goalkeeper Stephanie Palmieri.

“I thought Steph (Palmieri) and the defense played well,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “Offensively, we need to start taking advantage of our opportunities and finishing. We gave away too many opportunities by not putting the ball in the cage. We battled and kept fighting the whole game, but eventually we have to finish.”

La Salle out-shot Lehigh 11-6 for the game, despite being held without a shot in the first half. The Explorers also held an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners. Palmieri made six saves on the afternoon, including five in the second half.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the turf on Sunday when they head down the Main Line to take on No. 18 Villanova. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
