After disallowed goal, Lehigh falls in overtime

8/26/2006 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh played well in its season opener against Temple, but a controversial call led to the overturning of an apparent game winning goal for the visiting Mountain Hawks, who fell to Temple 2-1 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Greasey Field. The Brown and White took an early lead and held it until the final minutes of regulation, but suffer the hard-luck loss to begin their season at 0-1.

Junior Christy Smith scored the first Mountain Hawk goal of the season in the 23rd minute, coming in alone down the left side and beating Erin Hanshue to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead.

The Owls mounted a furious rally in the second half, out shooting Lehigh 8-0 in the second 35 minutes. With just under three minutes left in regulation Alli Lokey found Megan Hannahoe off of a penalty corner to tie the game at one.

The game went on to overtime, where the controversy began. The Mountain Hawks thought they had a game winner after sophomore Jennifer Cochran fed classmate Kara Zweizig, who put the ball in the back of the cage. After the officials deliberated the play, they determined the ball was illegally touched by a Lehigh player and the goal was disallowed. Minutes later Lokey scored the game winning goal to deal Lehigh a heartbreaking defeat.

“I’m proud of the way we played today,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “Our press defense was excellent. Our team battled hard, you have to give credit to them for that, but they’re frustrated with the final result and they have a right to be.”

Temple out shot Lehigh 16-4 on the afternoon and the Owls had a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Stephanie Palmieri kept Lehigh in the game, making eight saves on the afternoon.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Friday night when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to face the Big Red of Cornell. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
