After disallowed goal, Lehigh falls in overtime

Junior Christy Smith scored the first Mountain Hawk goal of the season in the 23rd minute, coming in alone down the left side and beating Erin Hanshue to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead.
The Owls mounted a furious rally in the second half, out shooting Lehigh 8-0 in the second 35 minutes. With just under three minutes left in regulation Alli Lokey found Megan Hannahoe off of a penalty corner to tie the game at one.
The game went on to overtime, where the controversy began. The Mountain Hawks thought they had a game winner after sophomore Jennifer Cochran fed classmate Kara Zweizig, who put the ball in the back of the cage. After the officials deliberated the play, they determined the ball was illegally touched by a Lehigh player and the goal was disallowed. Minutes later Lokey scored the game winning goal to deal Lehigh a heartbreaking defeat.
“I’m proud of the way we played today,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “Our press defense was excellent. Our team battled hard, you have to give credit to them for that, but they’re frustrated with the final result and they have a right to be.”
