Mountain Hawks fall 3-1 at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell took advantage of a slow Lehigh start and went on to hold off the Mountain Hawks 3-1 Friday night at Schoellkopf Field. The Mountain Hawks held the advantage in both shots and penalty corners, but failed to capitalize on several quality chances as they fall to 0-2 on the season. The Big Red opens its season at 1-0.

Lehigh out shot Cornell 10-5 in the opening half, but it was the Big Red who mustered a pair of goals in the first 35 minutes. Brenna Gulotta scored nine minutes into the contest and then assisted on Mandy Malzberg’s goal with three minutes remaining in the half.

Sophomore Kara Zweizig finally got Lehigh on the board in the 46th minute, when she whacked a deflected ball out of mid-air into the back of the cage to pull the Mountain Hawks within one. The Mountain Hawks pressured for a tying goal, but Sarah Miller provided an insurance goal for the Big Red 10 minutes after Zweizig’s tally.

“We came out a little flat, but I feel like we made the necessary adjustments and played better as the game went on,” said head coach Julie Mazer. “We made a vast improvement in shots and penalty corners, but we need to cut down on the unforced errors. I liked the way we kept battling and fighting and played with more confidence as the night went on.”

The Mountain Hawks out shot Cornell 15-11 and had an overwhelming 10-3 advantage in penalty corners, a vast improvement from Lehigh’s season opening loss to Temple when the Owls controlled both categories.

Senior Stephanie Palmieri stopped four shots in the cage for Lehigh, while her Cornell counterpart, Lizzie Goldblatt turned aside nine Mountain Hawks shots on the night.

Lehigh will wrap-up its season opening three game road trip when the Mountain Hawks return to the turf on Saturday, September 9 at Georgetown. Game time is set for 1:00 pm from Washington, D.C.
