Sweeney struck out nine and did not walk a batter, as the Mountain Hawks took the opener by a 3-0 score. The freshman continued her record-setting season, earning her 22nd win against just three losses. The 22 wins are both a league and school record. In the process, Sweeney became Lehigh’s single season strikeouts leader. Her 175 K’s so far eclipse the old mark of 172 set by Emily Ling in 2003.
At the plate, Sweeney helped herself by lacing a three-run triple to left field off Kelsey Nordstrom, accounting for the only three runs of the game.
The Raiders (13-23, 6-10 PL) were limited to just five hits in game one.
The Colgate bats had an even tougher go of it against Arico in the night cap. Colgate managed only two infield hits against Arico (9-6), as she struck out nine in eight shutout innings of work.
Lehigh’s lone run of the game was scored in the bottom of the eighth as the Mountain Hawks scored on a fielder’s choice. After Lauren Haney (hit by pitch) and Mary Wieder reached (fielder’s choice), right fielder Julie Sterrett laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt in front of home plate, moving pinch runner Ali Linsk down to third base and Wieder to second with one out. First baseman Taryn Hanley then dropped a bunt down the third base side, and Linsk scored the game winner.
Colgate’s Kate Howard was the tough-luck loser in game two. Howard (11-10) threw a complete game, allowing only one unearned run in 7.1 innings pitched.
The pair of wins clinches the 2006 Patriot League regular season title for the Mountain Hawks, and ensures that the 2006 tournament will be held at Lehigh’s Kaufman Field on May 12-13.
The Mountain Hawks are back in action Wednesday, as Lehigh visits Villanova in a twin bill originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday. Wednesday’s doubleheader gets underway at 3:00 pm from
