BROOKLYN, N.Y. – For the first time since the 1999-00 season, the Mountain Hawks opened their season with a road victory as Lehigh knocked off Long Island 57-36 at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.  The game was also the first meeting between to two teams since the 1993-94 season when the then-Engineers defeated Long Island 75-61 in Bethlehem, Pa.  With the victory, Lehigh now maintains a 5-2 series record over Long Island and a 24-20 all-time record over Northeast Conference opponents.

Lehigh held the Blackbirds scoreless for seven of the last eight minutes of the first half as the Mountain Hawks scored nine-straight points.  As the Brown and White shot 52.2% from field goal range, the Mountain Hawks entered halftime with a ten point lead over the Blackbirds.

The Mountain Hawks outscored Long Island 13-4 in the first 11 minutes of the second half en route to scoring 30 second half points.  Lehigh shot 51 percent from the floor, marking the first time the Mountain Hawks shot above 50 percent since 2004.  Additionally, the Mountain Hawks held Long Island to just 23.6 percent when shooting from field goal range.

Sophomore Melissa Rich led the Mountain Hawk offense as she recorded 12 points.  Meanwhile, senior Adrienne Blount had 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Valerie Nainima led the Blackbirds, scoring 14 points.

The Mountain Hawks will play their home-opener on Thursday night when they host Penn at Stabler Arena.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.  Tickets can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME, by visiting the Lehigh Athletics Ticket Office located in Grace Hall, or at anytime by logging onto lehighsports.com.
