Mountain Hawks blanked by Holy Cross

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Holy Cross scored two goals in the opening two minutes and went on to defeat Lehigh 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks were able to create several first half chances but were held off the scoreboard as they fall to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League. The Crusaders improve to 11-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league games.

“It was difficult to have a let down after a couple well played games,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “I know we’ve been working hard and trying, but we’re going to have to go back and figure it out with two league games left.”

Just over a minute into the contest Holy Cross took the lead as Eli Skovron banged home a rebound off a penalty corner for her fourth goal of the season. The Crusaders made it 2-0 15 seconds later as Sara O’Coin found Carolyn Connelly, who found the back of the cage for her third goal of the season.

“It certainly did not help for us to be two goals down in the first two minutes of the game,” said Mazer. “We did not execute early on today, and we’re going to have to play better in our remaining games.”

Lehigh controlled the majority of play for the duration of the half, but despite out shooting Holy Cross 6-3 after the two goals and holding a 5-3 penalty corner advantage, the Mountain Hawks could not beat Erin Singleton, who made seven stops for her fifth shutout of the season.

The Crusaders extended their lead in the second half, as O’Coin netted her 10th goal of the season in the 44th minute. Freshman Courtney Callahan scored her first goal of the season in traffic in front of the cage to round out the scoring.

For the game, Holy Cross out shot Lehigh 15-9, but the Mountain Hawks held a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners. Junior Christy Smith had six of Lehigh’s nine shots, including five on goal.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the turf on Wednesday night when they host Sacred Heart. Game time is set for 7:00 pm from the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game will be broadcast online at lehighsports.com with streaming audio and video provided by Yahoo! Sports.
