“Right now it comes down to execution,” explained Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “It’s about taking care of the ball. When we did that we were able to get shots off and corners and create opportunities.”
Sacred Heart got on the scoreboard first when Carisa Eye tallied her 29th goal of the season. Colleen Carney received the ball off a penalty corner and passed the ball to Eye, whose shot trickled through Steph Palmieri’s pads in the 22nd minute. The Pioneers further increased their lead six minutes later when Leah Stoehr but home a rebound from a tough angle.
Early in the second half, Lehigh earned a golden scoring opportunity when the Mountain Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke; however, senior Moira Garrity’s attempt was blocked by Whitney Mills.
The Mountain Hawks finally broke through at the 52:48 mark, when Sommerfield drove a shot off a penalty corner that slipped past Mills into the cage. Garrity and senior Mel Lepko were credited with assists on the play. Lehigh spent the final 18 minutes pressuring for an equalizer, but could not slip a second goal past Mills.
Sacred Heart held a slight 10-9 advantage in goals and an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners. Palmieri made seven saves on the night for Lehigh, while Mills set aside four shots to earn the win in goal.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the turf on Saturday when they wrap up the home schedule with a Patriot League showdown against No. 19 American. Game time is set for noon from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
