1/22/2006 2:21:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

ITHACA, N.Y. – The top two teams in the EIWA did battle Sunday afternoon and the fourteenth ranked Cornell Big Red handed No. 12 Lehigh its first EIWA dual loss in nearly four years, winning 19-14 in front of a record crowd of 4,425 at Newman Arena. Lehigh battled hard all afternoon but the Big Red won six of ten bouts and after several Mountain Hawk near misses, the Brown and White dropped their first conference dual since a 21-12 loss at Penn in February, 2002.

Cornell raced to a 7-0 lead behind a major decision from Troy Nickerson, who won the battle of true freshmen over Lehigh’s Matt Fisk, and then a 9-4 win from Mike Mormile over John Stout.

Lehigh got five critical team points back at 141 as Cory Cooperman scored a takedown and two three point near falls in the first period to open up an 8-0 lead over Nick Bridge. Cooperman also scored a late third period takedown and near fall to earn a technical fall over Bridge and get Lehigh within two. The Mountain Hawks would take a one point lead at 8-7 as Matt Ciasulli defeated Keith Dickey 7-3.

The featured bout of the afternoon featured top ten wrestlers at 157, but Cornell’s No.4 Dustin Manotti scored takedowns in the first and third periods to defeat No. 10 Derek Zinck 6-2 and put the Big Red up 10-8 at the halfway point.

The Mountain Hawks got another solid effort from sophomore Dave Nakasone who filled in at 165, and after several early near takedowns and a late score of his own, lost to nationally ranked Steve Anceravage 6-5 with the winning point coming on riding time.

Travis Frick kept Lehigh alive with a 5-2 win over Dan Miracola at 174. After Joe Mazzurco edged Dave Helfrich at 184 it came down to 197 and Mountain Hawk junior Matt Cassidy came up just short losing 3-2 to Cornell’s Jerry Rinaldi. Paul Weibel allowed Lehigh to wrap things up on a high note with a 3-1 win over Zach Hammond at heavyweight.

Lehigh falls to 8-5-1 with the loss, 2-1 in the EIWA. The Big Red are now 3-4, 1-0 in EIWA duals.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the mats on Saturday January 28, as Lehigh heads to New England to wrestle EIWA foes Harvard and Brown. Lehigh will wrestle Crimson in Cambridge, Mass. at 10:30, and then trek to Providence, R.I. to grapple with the Bears at 3:00. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as online at lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports.
