Lehigh opens season with dramatic 1-0 win over Cornell

9/2/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

ITHACA, N.Y. – For the second consecutive season Lehigh opened its season in dramatic fashion, defeating the Big Red of Cornell.  This time it was a 1-0 decision on the strength of a goal by senior captain Peter Classi with just one second remaining in the first half.  The Mountain Hawks always steady defense kept Cornell out of the goal for the remainder of the match, particularly down the stretch as goal keeper Charlie Sales sent back several shots, including a free kick, to pick up his fifth career shut out.  With the victory Lehigh goes to 1-0, while the Big Red falls to 0-1.

Classi scored from about ten yards out from the center of the field, as he beat Big Red goalie Steve Lesser to the lower left of the goal for his first-ever game-winning goal.  Sophomore Joe Clemente assisted on the score on a night that saw Cornell have five corner kicks to the Mountain Hawks two.  Lehigh out shot its opponent 13-11, while in goal Sales stopped three shots, and Lesser sent back seven.  Seniors Jim Stevens and Adam Williamson led Lehigh with five and four shots respectively, while the Big Red were led by Pape Seye’s five shots.

Lehigh returns to action on Friday, September 9, when the Mountain Hawks travel to Philadelphia to take on the Temple Owls in the Penn Soccer Classic.  Game time is scheduled for 12:00.
