Mountain Hawks fall in road opener to Lock Haven 3-1

8/31/2005 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Lehigh fell to Lock Haven in its 2005 road opener by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday evening, to drop the Mountain Hawks to 1-2 on the young season.  The Eagles remain unbeaten and improve their record to 2-0.  Senior Mary Beth Kuenne scored the lone goal of the night for the Brown and White, her second of the season, and classmate Meghan Gove stopped 13 shots in the cage, but it was not enough.

Kuenne put Lehigh ahead, when she took a pass from senior Marissa Iannarone and junior Kelsey Smith on a penalty corner, and deposited it in the back of the cage at the 7:58 mark of the first half.  The Mountain Hawks would take that lead into halftime.

The second half started much differently than the first, as Lock Haven scored just 38 seconds in, when Nikki Sweger scored on an assist from Mandy Daschbach, to tie the game at one.  The score would remain knotted at one, until Daschbach found the back of the cage at the 56:19 mark to put the Eagles in front 2-1.  Sarah Huber then sealed the victory with her own goal off of a feed from Sweger with 12 minutes remaining.

Head coach Julie Mazer liked the way Lehigh came out, but would like to see the Mountain Hawks sustain their effort for a full 70 minutes.  “We looked very strong in the first half and were able to go into halftime with the lead.  They (Lock Haven) just made some adjustments at halftime and came out stronger than we did.  Unfortunately we weren’t able to solve their adjustments and it cost us.”  Mazer concluded, “It took us a while to get our game going there in the second half.  We’re looking to put together a complete game; we’ve yet to do that so far this season.”

For the game, Lehigh was out shot 22-8, while both teams had three corners.  The Mountain Hawks leader in shots was Kuenne and Maureen Harrington with two apiece, while the Eagles were led by Sweger and her seven shots.  Lock Haven goal keeper Becca Yerkes sent back four shots on the evening.

Lehigh returns to action on Friday evening when the Mountain Hawks welcome the Big Red of Cornell to the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 with all the action broadcast live on lehighsports.com, with streaming audio provided by Yahoo!.
