BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh picked up its first win of the 2005 season on Sunday afternoon, as the Mountain Hawks defeated Monmouth 2-1 at the Ulrich Sports Complex on the strength of a Molly LaBonte goal with just 2:54 remaining in the contest.  With the win, the Mountain Hawks improve to 1-1 on the young season, while Monmouth goes to 0-2.

Lehigh got on the board first when Jen Schmeltzle scored off of a corner on an assist from Marissa Iannarone 18:28 into the contest.  Lehigh would then hold the visiting Hawks scoreless for the next 22 minutes, until Annie LoPresti scored off a feed from Bridget Greene and the game was tied at one.  It appeared as though the teams were headed for overtime, but LaBonte scored the game-winner, and Lehigh played keep away for the remaining three minutes to pick up the first win of 2005.

In goal for Lehigh, senior tri-captain Meghan Gove had another strong day as she sent back three shots in 70 minutes of action.  The Mountain Hawks out shot Monmouth 25-6 for the game, and had 12 corners to the Hawks three.  Mary Beth Kuenne led the Brown and White with four shots, while Schmeltzle and Stacy Sommerfield unleashed three shots.

Head coach Julie Mazer was pleased to get the first victory of the season, but still sees room for improvement from her team.  “I think we did a lot of good things out there today.  We stepped up our effort after yesterday’s loss.  I’m happy with the fact that we were able to bounce back and get the win.”  Mazer concluded, “I’m proud of what we were able to do out there, but we still have a long way to go to get where we want to be.”

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday evening when the Mountain Hawks travel to Lock Haven.  Game time is set for 7:00.
