Lehigh falls in season opener to Temple

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior captain Meghan Gove registered 15 saves in the cage, but it wasn’t enough as Temple downed the Mountain Hawks by a 5-1 score in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Saturday’s Temple victory marked the Owls second straight opening day triumph over the Mountain Hawks.

“That certainly was not the way we wanted to open our season," head coach Julie Mazer said following the game.  "Meghan kept us in the game today with her play in goal.  But we just had too many unforced errors and Temple was able to capitalize on our mistakes.”

Things started on a positive note for Lehigh, as senior Mary Beth Kuenne scored off a penalty corner just 2:15 into the contest to give the Mountain Hawks a brief 1-0 edge.  Marissa Iannarone and Kelsey Smith assisted on the score.

However, the Lehigh lead was short-lived.  Less than ninety seconds later, Temple’s Lindsay Holman tied the score at 1-1 off a feed from Alli Lokey.  Forty seconds after that, Melissa Fritze put Temple ahead 2-1, and the Owls never relinquished the lead.

Holman added two more unassisted goals for the Owls en route to the win.  As a team, Temple out-shot Lehigh 26-11 overall.  The Owls had 16 penalty corners to just four opportunities for the Mountain Hawks., and Lehigh was out shot 26-11 on the afternoon.  Erin Hanshue played the entire 70 minutes in goal for Temple and sent back five Mountain Hawk shots.

Lehigh will try and get in the win column on Sunday, as the Mountain Hawks host Monmouth at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Action gets underway at 1:00 pm, and the game will be televised live on Service Electric 2 Sports as well as on-line at lehighsports.com.
