Mountain Hawks roll past Temple for first spring win

2/5/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh picked up its first victory of the spring season on Saturday afternoon, as the Mountain Hawks rolled to a 6-1 victory over visiting Temple in the first annual Lehigh Winter Invitational at the Lewis Tennis Center.  The win improves the Mountain Hawks to 1-2 in the spring season, while the Owls fall to 0-2.  Temple also lost to Stetson in Bethlehem on Saturday.

The Mountain Hawks picked up the doubles point as Ty Esler and Randall Smalley earned a convincing 8-2 win at first doubles.  After the Owls earned a win at second doubles, Lehigh rallied for an 8-1 win by Andrew Shapiro and Alfredo Fernandez-Concha at third doubles.

In singles play, the Mountain Hawks won five of six flights to cruise to the victory.  After a hard-fought, three-set win by Ty Esler in top flight singles play, Lehigh won four of the remaining five flights – three in straight sets – en route to the victory.

Lehigh returns to the court on Saturday, February 12, when the Mountain Hawks host Howard at the Lewis Tennis Center.
