Lehigh rolls to Sunday sweep of Drexel

2/27/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis

Bethlehem, PA – The Lehigh men’s and women’s tennis teams completed a perfect weekend on Sunday sweeping Drexel by identical 7-0 scores at the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawk women won their fifth consecutive match as they improve to 5-1 on the season, while the men’s team picks up its second straight victory and improves to 4-5.

The Lehigh women had no problem slaying the Dragons, first taking all three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-1. Then the Mountain Hawks reeled off six singles victories, all in straight sets. The men also swept through doubles competition and like their female counterparts swept through six singles matches with little resistance.

Head coach Dave Shook was pleased with the men’s effort against tough opponents like Brown, Stetson and Boston College, saying they have learned how to operate under pressure.

“The guys enjoyed playing today,” Shook said. “They were able to utilize their skills and what they have learned playing some top ranked teams.”

As for the women Shook is also pleased with how they have been playing.

“They’re playing well and our record is good. The women are on a roll,” Shook said.

Next weekend the teams will head south to play four Florida teams, including Eckerd and Florida Gulf Coast. Shook believes his team will do well, but knows that these schools offer athletic scholarships and participate in rigorous player recruitment.

“We’re going to play hard and play well. I just don’t know if it will be well enough to beat these teams,” Shook said.

The Lehigh women will return to the court on Sunday, March 6 against Florida Southern at 2:00, while the men will be back in action on Monday March 7 against Eckerd College.
