Mountain Hawks roll past Army for eighth league win

Bethlehem, PA – Three Lehigh players scored in double figures as the Mountain Hawks rolled to a 72-53 win over visiting Army at Stabler Arena on Friday night.  The win improves Lehigh’s record to 16-7 overall and 8-2 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights fall to 12-11 overall and 5-5 in league play.

The eight league wins are just one shy of the all-time school record, and the 16 overall triumphs matches the most of any team in the Sue Troyan era.

The Mountain Hawks came out strong and built an early 8-0 advantage just 2:38 into the contest.  Army later rallied to tie the score and even took a brief 18-16 lead before the Mountain Hawks closed out the half strong.  Carli Toliver came off the bench and sank three three-pointers to give Lehigh a 31-24 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Mountain Hawks quickly pulled away, building as much as a 20-point lead before the night was through.

Seniors Mary Frances Hynoski and Jessica DePalo each scored 16 to lead Lehigh, while Sara Ellis added 15.  Hynoski had another phenomenal all-around night, adding seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

For the game, Lehigh shot 49% from the floor, sinking seven three pointers.  Army was limited to just 38% shooting, turning the ball over 18 times.  The 18 Black Knight miscues led to 25 Lehigh points.

Lehigh now has a three-game lead for second place in the league standings, thanks to Friday’s win.  The Mountain Hawks host unbeaten Holy Cross (10-0) on Sunday, in a rematch of a thrilling three-point affair two weeks ago in Worcester.

Sunday’s Lehigh-Holy Cross tilt gets underway at 1:00 from Stabler Arena.  Tickets can be purchased at the arena box office on gameday.
