First day of action complete at Southern Scuffle

12/29/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Day one of the third annual Southern Scuffle is in the books and after ten grueling hours of wrestling Lehigh sits in ninth place with 32 team points. The Mountain Hawks were dealt several unfortunate setbacks, but managed to send five out of 14 grapplers onto the quarterfinals while two others remain alive in the consolation brackets. Seniors Cory Cooperman and Travis Frick and juniors Matt Ciasulli, Paul Weibel and Matt Cassidy all survived Thursday unscathed for the Brown and White.

Cooperman, the top seed at 141 pounds advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals with a pair of bonus wins, a 13-5 major decision over Old Dominion’s Bane Compton then a pin of Virginia Tech’s Dan LeClere. Ciasulli also delivered two wins by fall to advance to the quarters at 149. Next up for Ciasulli is a match-up with top seed Gregor Gillespie of Edinboro on Friday.

Frick advanced with a pair of workmanlike decisions at 174, while Cassidy and Weibel formed a formidable one-two combination at 197 as both won three matches to advance to the final eight. Weibel won his first match by tech fall, and then erased an early 4-0 deficit to edge Oregon State’s Dan Pitsch in sudden victory. Cassidy won his first two bouts by decision before securing a major in his round of 16 match. Whoever scores more points between Cassidy and Weibel will have his points count towards the team score.

Also still alive in the consolation brackets are Trevor Chinn at 149 and Dave Helfrich at 184. Chinn was impressive in his first two bouts before he was caught on his back and pinned in his round of 16 bout. He responded with a major decision in his wrestleback and will wrestle tomorrow. Helfrich dropped his round of 16 bout in sudden victory but won his first consolation bout to stay alive.

The Mountain Hawks were forced to wrestle without two of their senior captains. Derek Zinck came down with the flu earlier in the week and was unable to compete, while Troy Letters won his opening bout by fall, but suffered an injury early in his round of 16 bout and was forced to default from the tournament. Complete Lehigh results are available below and complete tournament results can be seen by clicking the link above. Defending champion Minnesota leads the team scoring after day one with 58 points.

Action at the Southern Scuffle continues on Friday with the Quarterfinals slated for 9:00 am. The Championship finals will take place Friday night at 6:30 pm from the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.
