No. 8 Mountain Hawks to open season against Rider

11/8/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

Lehigh welcomes the Rider Broncs to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Thursday night in the 2005-06 season opener for both teams. The Mountain Hawks come in ranked eighth in the preseason coming off a 21 dual win season a year ago. Last season Lehigh claimed its fourth straight EIWA team championship and went on to place eighth at the NCAA Championships. The Mountain Hawks finished in the top ten for the fifth time in six seasons, and placed three wrestlers (Cory Cooperman, Troy Letters and Jon Trenge) in the top three for just the fifth time in 75 years of NCAA Championships.

Cooperman and Letters return for Lehigh as part of a deep senior class that also includes All-American’s Travis Frick and Derek Zinck, as well as Brian LaMay, who placed at last year’s EIWA Championships, despite wrestling up two weight classes. Letters enters this season as a three-time EIWA Champion and three-time All-American. He has a chance to become just Lehigh’s third four-time All-American and the fifth four-time EIWA titlist

Rider posted a 12-7 dual record a year ago. The Broncs finished second to Hofstra in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament and qualified five grapplers for NCAAs where Rider finished in a tie for 39th place. Head coach Gary Taylor enters his 28th season at the helm and his next dual win will be number 300 in his career.

Last year, Lehigh defeated NC State 39-3 in its season opener. The Mountain Hawks are 8-2 in season openers under head coach Greg Strobel.

Thursday night’s match gets underway at 7:00 from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. For tickets, visit the link above or call (610) 7LU-GAME during normal business hours.
