Lehigh's defense shines as Mountain Hawks roll

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a slow start, No. 13 Lehigh had little trouble putting away a spirited Georgetown team, rolling to a 46-14 victory on Saturday afternoon in front of 13,071 at Goodman Stadium on Family Weekend.  Lehigh out gained the Hoyas 437 to 159, including an impressive 332 to 44 advantage on the ground, led by junior running back Marques Thompson, who rushed for 117 yards on 11 carries, and senior Eric Rath who gained 91 yards on 15 attempts.  With the win, the Mountain Hawks improve to 7-2 overall and coupled with Lafayette’s loss to Colgate is in a three-way tie for first place in the Patriot League at 3-1.  The Hoyas fall below .500 to 4-5 overall, and 2-3 in league action.

"I'm thankful that our defense showed up ready to play," said Lehigh head coach Pete Lembo, a 1992 Georgetown grad, following the win.  "We were well-prepared for everything we saw (defensively)."

Lehigh came out and went right to work on the Hoyas, as junior Justin Musiek continued his recent hot streak, nailing a 33-yard field goal at the 10:53 mark to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-0 lead.  After Lehigh got the ball back, Sedale Threatt hit senior Winfred Porter on a five-yard touchdown pass, giving the home team a 10-0 lead with 6:41 left in the opening quarter.  Just 21 seconds later, the Brown and White added to its lead again, recording a safety, upping the score to 12-0, which is how the first would end.

As the second quarter began, Georgetown had the ball deep in Mountain Hawks territory, and got on the board for the first time when junior quarterback Nick Cangelosi scrambled five yards into the end zone, trimming the Lehigh lead to 12-7.  Freshman Jason Leo tacked on three more points for the Mountain Hawks, when he connected on his first-ever collegiate field goal from 43-yards out, making the score 15-7 with 5:36 left in the half.

With just under three minutes remaining in the half, Threatt led the Mountain Hawks on an 11-play, 68-yard drive that ended with a five-yard touchdown pass to senior Adam Kovacs, sending the Brown and White into halftime up by a score of 22-7.  Lehigh out gained the Hoyas 241 yards to 40 in the first 30 minutes, including 202-26 on the ground.  Thompson led the way with 82 yards on seven carries, while Rath picked up 61 yards on eight attempts.

For Georgetown, Emir Davis carried the ball 11 times, finishing with 35 yards, while Cangelosi gained 16 yards, including the one touchdown.  Lehigh had a very slight edge in time of possession, 15:02 to 14:58, and gained 11 first downs to the Hoyas two

The third quarter is where Lehigh really started to put the Hoyas away, scoring 24 points in just under nine minutes.  First, Musiek added another field goal, this one from 24-yards out and then Threatt threw a perfect 43-yard strike to senior Kevin Zebluim down the left sideline, putting the Mountain Hawks comfortably in front 32-7.  Rath would add a three-yard touchdown run, and after Georgetown fumbled a punt away, Threatt found Zebluim again, this time for a seven-yard score and a 46-7 lead heading into the final quarter.

Georgetown would add a Cangelosi to Harrison Beacher touchdown, but it was too little, too late, as Lehigh rolled to the win.

Threatt wound up with 95 yards passing, including four touchdowns, while Zebluim was the leading receiver with two catches for 50 yards and the two scores.  Threatt added 73 yards rushing, including a long of 22.  For the Hoyas, Cangelosi wound up with 60 yards through the air, while Davis finished with a team-high 56.

"It's nice to see that when one side of the ball (Lehigh's offense or defense) is struggling, the other has shown the ability to shoulder the burden," Lembo added.

Defensively, the Mountain Hawks were led by eight tackles from senior captain Kaloma Cardwell.  The Hoyas were limited to 44 yards rushing and 157 yards of total offense.

Lehigh returns to action next weekend, when the Mountain Hawks travel to the Bronx, to take on Fordham.  Game time is scheduled for a 1:05 kickoff.  All of the action will be broadcast live in the Lehigh Valley on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM, as well as worldwide on lehighsports.com with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports.  Veteran Matt Kerr and Kody Fedorcha '00 will handle the broadcast duties.

EXTRA POINTS … Saturday’s large crowd was in large part due to Lehigh’s annual Family Weekend festivities, but unseasonably warm temperatures and sunny skies in the area also helped … Lehigh head coach Pete Lembo (Georgetown ’92) is now a perfect 5-0 versus his alma mater … Lehigh has now scored at least 40-points in five games, including three straight.  The Mountain Hawks are 15-0 all-time under Lembo in games they score 40 or more
