Mountain Hawks continue fall play at UConn Invitational

STORRS, Conn. – Lehigh continued fall play this weekend at the UConn Invitational at the UConn tennis courts. The Mountain Hawks were hoping to match the success the team had at last years tournament, where Lehigh’s Ty Esler won the flight A singles championship and the four Lehigh doubles teams finished one-two in both doubles brackets. This year the Mountain Hawks could not match last year’s success, but overall it was a good weekend of tennis for the Brown and White.

“We started off pretty slow as we had a rough week of practice with the guys having exams this week,” said head coach Dave Shook. “The guys got a lot better as the weekend went on, they finished the tournament strong and overall I thought the team played well.”

The Mountain Hawks best result was turned in by junior Ryan Lloyd, who was the runner-up in flight B singles. Lloyd won his first three matches before losing a heartbreaking championship match to Marist’s Brendon Van Wasbeek 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.

In flight A singles, senior Randall Smalley reached the quarterfinals before bowing out, while junior Alfredo Fernandez-Concha picked up an early victory to reach the round of 16.

Evan Volkman also picked up a singes victory, at flight C, for the Mountain Hawks.

In doubles action Lehigh fell short in its attempt to repeat as champions in both flights. John Nespoli and Fernandez-Concha reached the semi-finals in flight A. Lehigh’s No. 1 team was the only team not comprised of Marist players to reach the final four. In flight B, Lehigh’s number four team of Volkman and Jon-Michael Caminiti won its opening match over a team from Monmouth.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, September 15, when the Mountain Hawks host the Lehigh Invitational at the Lewis Tennis Center.
