Mountain Hawks continue fall play at UConn Invitational

“We started off pretty slow as we had a rough week of practice with the guys having exams this week,” said head coach Dave Shook. “The guys got a lot better as the weekend went on, they finished the tournament strong and overall I thought the team played well.”
The Mountain Hawks best result was turned in by junior Ryan Lloyd, who was the runner-up in flight B singles. Lloyd won his first three matches before losing a heartbreaking championship match to Marist’s Brendon Van Wasbeek 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.
In flight A singles, senior Randall Smalley reached the quarterfinals before bowing out, while junior Alfredo Fernandez-Concha picked up an early victory to reach the round of 16.
Evan Volkman also picked up a singes victory, at flight C, for the Mountain Hawks.
In doubles action Lehigh fell short in its attempt to repeat as champions in both flights. John Nespoli and Fernandez-Concha reached the semi-finals in flight A. Lehigh’s No. 1 team was the only team not comprised of Marist players to reach the final four. In flight B, Lehigh’s number four team of Volkman and Jon-Michael Caminiti won its opening match over a team from Monmouth.
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, September 15, when the Mountain Hawks host the Lehigh Invitational at the
